Basic Skills 1 - 6

Designed for ages 7 - 14

Learn To Skate USA endorsed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and US SpeedskatingThe Learn to Skate USA foundation is based on fun, safe, and solid skill progression that provides all skaters with the skills necessary to reach their recreational or competitive goals. The progression of skill development allows skaters to build and master fundamental skating skills so they will be successful with any ice skating sport they choose.

Six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. The curriculum offers something for everyone, from the first steps on the ice to mastering advanced techniques. This approach allows skaters to progress at their own rate and advance only after demonstrating skill mastery

Upon completing the Basic Skills 1-6 levels, skaters can confidently advance to more specialized skating areas, including hockey or Aspire figure skating.

  • Basic 1 & 2 – Discover, Learn, and Play: These introductory levels allow skaters new to the lesson environment to build confidence while learning to skate.
  • Basic 3–6 – FUNdamentals: Once a skater has passed Basic 1 and 2, these levels develop the fundamental skating skills on the ice. The focus is on learning the ABCs of basic athleticism: agilitybalancecoordination, and speed.

In the last class of the session, each skater receives an Instructor EvaluationEvery skating element has a prescribed passing standard.

Please click here to review the Basic Skills curriculum. You can view video examples of the skills in the Learn to Skate USA app.
